Big Ten Football

Published in Untagged  by OOH

This past weekend was my college's recent alumni weekend. This has been a highly anticipated weekend where all my coed friends from around the country met up and relived our college years.

Although it was a whirlwind weekend, one event stood out above all the rest. Obviously since this blog is dedicated to new media and the mobile platform, it would only make sense that my anecdote would only have to pertain to this subject. And you ask me how? I shall tell you.

During the Saturday football game, I realized that everything has been affected by the emerging mobile platform. Over the loud speakers at half time, the announcer explains that the stadium crowd has the opportunity to choose the next song ,that the band will play, via cell phone. The announcer broadcasted the melody options and the specific code representing each for the audience to text in.

Call me what you like, but I was elated by this new addition to the football game experience. Not only does the cellphone serve as a form of communication, but brings a large group of people together and is used in innovative ways to entertain. People have said that new media has caused people to become more distant and less likely to form relationships yet my experience this past weekend shows how mobile devices bring a town full of people to direct the marching band.

How cool would this be as an application. Hint hint...
