Classic Art Meets 2009 on a Cell Phone: “Telesymphony”?

Published in Untagged  by OOH

I just came across this video about a Cell Phone Symphony (telesymphony) called “Dialtones” , and it’s totally freaky! Created by Golan Levin and Scott Gibbons, two men who’ve made it their mission to show the world that mobile devices make awesome music synths, came up with an amazing idea for an orchestral show doing just that. But what’ll really surprise you is what (or who) they use as speakers…

As fans arrive into the show, Golan and Scott makes sure to collect everyone’s number and note where they’ll be seating, giving them a visual map of the audiences. With this information, the two composers would make the whole house explode with sound by sending a specific ringtone to each phone. It’s like at an old-fashioned symphony where you have your string sections, your percussion, etc. except the sound is in the audiences being projected to the audience.

It’s pretty cool watching the phones light up in the audience as you’re watching this video. Levin and Gibbons premiered their musical mobile performance in September 2007. I’d say they totally accomplished their mission in proving that cell phones rock!
